SLA or stereolithography is a process where light sensitive resin liquid is hardened using the light layer by layer or cured until forming the whole object based on your design. We are sure you are already familiar with the latter because they are very well-known and often being the go-to for many people since it is like a safe bet but for Artillery, not many seem to know this company yet and what’s surprising, their machines are actually good especially the Sidewinder X1 which is comparable to CR 10 V2. They are equally good FDM machines with medium build volume and are still below $500 which should be amazing for a machine that can print quite the capacity.

However, being a different model from different companies Artillery Sidewinder X1 and Creality CR10 V2 are also different. Many have expected the CR10 Pro to offer what carried by X1 but this is the version 2 we are talking about and there might be some differences as well and in our opinion, what set them apart the most is the system because the Artillery doesn’t use the common Bowden tubing anymore for this machine which is almost everywhere in machines we have compared before.

Like many other FDM machines out there, both of these models are using two pillars holding the hot end to move in both Z and X axis while the building bed is moving on Y axis. They will require an assembly when coming from the box but you can complete them following the manual so everyone may have different speed depending on their experience. These are large machines and rather tall so we do recommend putting them on a table instead of shelf styled storing.

The CR 10 is very similar to the original machine but you can notice the difference by the additional two steel sticks supporting the X and Z pillars, probably to make the machine more stable when operating. As you can see from the sample picture above, the build system is cleaner for X1 because it puts the computer on the printer itself instead of separating it with different housing. This printer also has a colored touch screen compared to standard monitors.

Moving further, let’s talk about the build volume of Artillery Sidewinder X1 and Creality CR10 V2 first since volume is something we can’t get out of an entry-level machine. These medium-sized printers are equally capable of printing up to 300mm wide by 300mm long, and 400mm tall. The bed is a regular heated bed and they are also able to be set to a pretty high temperature but, the X1 is slightly higher at up to 130 degree than the latter at 100 degree Celsius.

What’s very different between these printer in our opinion is their printing system because usually what you will find in this price range is Bowden style tube and it is understandable as they are cheaper to make but X1 is actually using titan extruder or direct drive type so there is no need to use tubing before the filament reach the hot end as the filament itself is pulled by printing mechanism that also hot end and moving along the X axis.

With this type or mechanism it added weight into the X axis and it can be an issue since we need to make it stable but, with dual rod system and the aluminum pillars are wide enough to hold the carriage weight including for the top horizontal frame that help holding the frame and support the filament as it comes from the top. If you choose the CR 10 V2 however, it is also possible to upgrade this printer with E3D Titan Kits.

You can find the tutorial on the internet but not only assembling the new carriage, we also need to spend about $60 to $80 for this kit and this will add up the cost for this printer to be more than $500 which is quite above the X1.

Now let’s talk about the performance and for Creality, we do have some complaint that probably many have experienced as well but comes out of the box, the machine may look amazing and it is but for some reason the Y axis becomes wobbly after printing so you may want to tighten it and the X axis rollers may need some quality upgrade as they can wear quickly. From the printing result however, both of them are very reliable and the best thing is you can build a pretty large model.

There is no out of ordinary issue with the print quality as they are equally smooth and while there are some stringing issues, it often occurs on many other printers in this range. Overall the quality is great out of the box and you may be able to use them both for hobby and professional printing.
